Te Urewera Treks Te Urewera Treks provides a range of unique eco-cultural wilderness treks bringing you a truly special guided walking experience. Treks that take you into the incredibly remote indigenous podocarp and beech forests of Te Urewera and Whirinaki.

You will discover some of New Zealand's most magnificent indigenous rainforest as well as the beautiful Lake Waikaremoana. You will also experience the region's rich native birdlife, like kereru (native wood pigeon), tui, and kaka (parrot).

In Te Urewera indigenous Maori culture is alive and thriving, and you will often hear the Maori language being spoken, a rarity in other parts of New Zealand.

Tuhoe - the children of the mist - are the local Maori tribe of Te Urewera and are well known for their warm and welcoming hospitality. Te Urewera's local Tuhoe guides have an extensive knowledge of the area, and the trees, plants, and wildlife that you will encounter. They will bring the forest alive for you with their colourful stories of the region's histories and mysteries.

This trek takes you into the Whirinaki Forest Park where you'll see some of the most magnificent indigenous podocarp forest found anywhere in the world. You will also hear about Hineruarangi, guardian of the Whirinaki Valley.

Te Urewera-Whirinaki Combined (2 Days)
This trek gives you the best of both the Whirinaki and Te Urewera - magnificent indigenous podocarp and beech forests as well as expansive views over Te Urewera.
