Trends in New Zealand Tourism

Trenz 2010 featured discussions based on changes the Tourism Industry was facing. As if swine flu, volcanic eruptions, and political unrest is not enough now Tourism Operators need to recognise the impact of online space. Online space being a much quicker and more cost efffective marketing tool is driving an "unprecedented change" to last minute bookings.

What does this mean at the coal face! It does not change anything as these trends are already inplace, however it does impact on the decisions Operators make as to where their marketing directions are taking them! and that needs to be online. Just as online shopping is set to soar, retail sales in New Zealand are predicted to hit $1 billion, the tourism industry needs to recognise this trend and act to catch the wave.

Franz Joseph Trial by Twilight Firelight

Recently tourists travelling to visit the world famous Franz Joseph Glacier were caught out by the renown NZ South Island twilight (clearly it was not a full moon). And no this is not similar to the film series Twilight by Stephanie Meyer with vampires and werewolves.

While visiting the Franz Joseph Glacier the light started to fade, so the resourceful visitors took their clothing and set it alight in order to find their way back to their motorhome. However observant travellers saw the fire and called emergency services, oh dear!!!!!!

By the time emergency services arrived the fire was nowhere to be found as the travellers had got back safe and sound to their motorhome and had moved on. The moral of the story.........be prepared in Twilight you never know what might happen.
